Lesser Sires - FinaleAnd so it was that the armies of men marched forth against the gates of Mordor itself, led by Elessar and all members of the Fellowship. Pippin rode in front of Mithrandir on Shadowfax, and Merry rode before Delarkin. The youngest knight in Gondor bore the standard of his King's white tree, and he held the banner as straight and tall as any other soldier might. But beside him, Éomer rode in grim silence.
'Let the Lord of the Black Land come forth,' Aragorn called upon the fortress when no eye peered at them from the walls. 'Let justice be done upon him!'
His voice bounced hollow off the metal doors. At first there seemed to be no answer, but then there was a resounding crack. The rusty gates began to creak, then before the war party a crevasse appeared. Behind the gap was little to be seen, as smoke and dust shrouded all the darkness beyond. But out from the cloud of vapor rode a single horseman, clad in long black robes and a grotesque helmet. His horse was mangled, starved, an
The Hurt DoctorA man lay dying on a hill
quite far away from home
And though he sought no company
He was not long alone
For passers-by had seen the flash
the arch, the falling star
And came along, the two of them
that saw it from afar
They tried to help the ailing man
with blood across his chest
But he just pushed their hands away
and called it for the best
His manner rough, his bleeding deep
his anger quite unnerving
He ordered them to save their care
for others more deserving
The humans did not heed the words
so blunt and harshly spoken
And asked him what could burn so deep
and why his heart was broken
He laughed at them yet cried at them
this dying, hurting man
With tears that slipped down from his eyes-
"You'll never understand.
"You never saw those towers fall
and now you never will
My hearts have beaten for too long
I now wish they were still."
His face began to shine and glow
before he met his end
He moaned words in delirium
they could not comprehend
"A thousand miles, a thousand years
Lesser Sires - 13When Delarkin finally came to stand on the deck of the flagship of Umbar, he greeted his companions all quite solemnly. However, Legolas grasped his arm firmly and beamed. 'Fear not, my friend,' he assured the lad happily. 'I know now what the Great Lady meant in her message to me.
'It was not a warning of my death,' he explained. 'But of a new desire that has now come upon me.'
The company watched as the Prince of the Fair Folk stepped towards the railing and stared out at the far reaches of the waters behind them. 'The sea, the sea,' he sighed with great zeal. 'Oh how I long to set eyes on that great expanse. In all our travels my heart has ached for the trees of my home, but never once with such a fervor as this yearning which now holds me captive.'
'If thou hearest the cry of a gull on the shore,' Delarkin murmured as he started to understand. 'Thy heart shall then rest in the forest no more.'
'Aye, for it now rests with the sea,' the Elf confirmed. 'And shall find solace nowhere e
Lesser Sires - 12As dawn sent the sun rising above the peaks of the mountains, Delarkin rode in company with his three companions and shivered in the shadow of the ravines they traversed. There was no morning dew to be found in the parched forest that loomed over them like an eery cage. Even Legolas of the Fair Folk, prince of Mirkwood, could not long stand being under those trees.
At last the company turned, and before them lay a door carved within the face of the rock: a crude entrance, unlike any Dwarven gate. Skulls filled the shelves around it, and up above were hieroglyphics made of long strokes like skeletons.
The horses faltered, and no act of their masters could urge them forward. Eventually everyone dismounted, and together they approached the cave. Gimli drew in an uneasy breath. 'The very warmth of my blood seems stolen away,' he whispered.
'The way is shut,' read Legolas of the message over the mantle. 'It was made by those who are dead, and the dead keep it. The way is shut.'
As if awaken
Lesser Sires - 11Indeed it was well that Mithrandir left for the White Tower when he did, for within less than a week the beacons were lit and burning over the mountain peaks. Despite his bitterness, Théoden chose to answer his allies and mustered the Rohirram from across his kingdom, and Rohan prepared for war.
As the soldiers rallied themselves and the city of Edoras teemed with the sounds of sharpening metal and iron pounded by the smiths, Merry raced through the chaos of Meduseld to find Boromir's esquire just wrapping up the last of his pack.
The Hobbit, at first so eager to speak with his friend, now found his tongue thick with unsurety and he shuffled his hairy feet. 'Um… Delarkin?'
The boy looked up, and he smiled but faintly at the companion that had sought him out. He hoisted his pack and shield over his shoulder. 'Are you ready to ride, my friend?'
The Halfling hesitated, and his face grew colored, for this was why he had come. 'I- I don't know,' he admitted sheepishly. 'I want to - i
